Iguana Fest promises funky kind of fun

Get ready for a “funky kind of fun” as Iguana Fest hits the streets of downtown Port Lavaca on Saturday April 6.
Headlining this year’s event is the dynamic Brown Sugar Band promising an electrifying performance. DJ Les Evans will kick off the festivities at 4 p.m., followed by Texas 361 taking the stage at 5 p.m., and the band Muzik delivering a stellar lineup of 80s and 90s hits.
After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival made a triumphant return last year, reclaiming its status as a beloved Calhoun County tradition.
“This year’s street dance is something we’re truly looking forward to,” said Tania French, the events coordinator for Port Lavaca. “We’ve curated an exceptional lineup of music and contests, featuring beloved crowd favorites like the watermelon eating and hula hoop competitions.”
Justin Karl, owner of the Green Iguana Restaurant and the mastermind behind the festival, originally launched Iguana Fest in 2000 with the aim of revitalizing the quiet downtown scene.
“Back then, downtown was lifeless. I felt we needed something to spark socialization and fun,” Karl reminisced.
Despite limited local festivals at the time, Karl’s vision was to inject vibrancy into Port Lavaca without necessarily drawing crowds from afar. However, through word-of-mouth, the festival gradually attracted visitors from neighboring towns, boosting downtown traffic and attention.
Although Karl discontinued Iguana Fest in 2006, the city breathed new life into the event in 2016, celebrating its local spirit and community engagement.
“Iguana Fest is not just an event; it has become a tradition that unites our community and delights visitors. Year after year, it symbolizes the essence of our city’s spirit and is eagerly anticipated,” said Interim City Manager Jody Weaver.
“Iguana Fest is a great way to spend time with family and friends, while enjoying our beautiful downtown area and listening to some great bands,” said longtime community member Jacquie Grissom. “I love the unique atmosphere of having a block party on Main Street while playing games with other people and visiting local vendors.”
This year’s festivities will not only showcase live music but also offer a plethora of food, contests, vendors, and prizes, ensuring a day filled with entertainment for all.
The free event will run from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Port Lavaca. For more information, go to http://www.iguanafest.com.
